A stolen SUV plunged into a canal while trying to avoid a detour set up in response to a deadly traffic crash.
According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office (SLCSO), troopers were investigating a deadly crash at the intersection of Indrio Road on Monday and I-95 when a silver SUV was observed attempting to evade a temporary traffic control point set up by a St. Lucie County deputy.
Deputies say the vehicle attempted to avoid I-95 by proceeding down an off-road embankment, causing it to crash into a nearby canal.
The driver of the silver SUV immediately fled the scene, leading deputies to find that the vehicle had been stolen out of Palm Beach County.
The Fort Pierce Police Department responded and utilized one of its K-9 units to assist deputies in the search. The driver was located and taken into custody shortly thereafter.
A photo provided by law enforcement shows a man being handcuffed by five deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.
An investigation is currently underway, with assistance from deputies of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
