After a man was shot and killed in his car at a grocery store and the West Palm Beach Police Department’s announcement of a suspect’s arrest on Thursday, the arrest report detailing the investigation and the shooter’s mugshot was released on Friday.
A ShotSpotter gunshot alert reported eight rounds were fired at Adams Grocery on 2121 N. Tamarind Avenue, at around 8 p.m. on August 23.At the scene, officers found the victim— Tysen Mikenzie Cox.
Detectives said the 21-year-old was shot in his chest while he was in his car. Cox drove away from the scene, but crashed into another car on 25th Street before collapsing. Witnesses pulled the unresponsive Cox from the car and began CPR, but he died on the scene at 8:20 p.m., police said.
Officers found multiple 9mm bullet casings in the parking lot.
Surveillance footage from Adams Grocery and security cameras provided crucial evidence. The suspect — identified as 25-year-old Denzel Jackson—was seen approaching Cox’s car and firing multiple shots into the driver’s side. Jackson then fled the scene on foot, the report stated.
Further investigation revealed a green and black Chrysler Pacifica, linked to the Jackson, left in a parking lot on 1720 North Congress Avenue on August 24.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for the Chrysler and discovered paperwork and prescription bottles belonging to a different man. When police brought him into questioning, he admitted to witnessing the shooting and identified the shooter as “Jit,” a nickname for Denzel Jackson. The witness provided details of the events leading up to the shooting, including his interactions with Jackson.
He stated that Jackson had asked for a ride to the Tamarind corridor to find his girlfriend. The witness, along with a friend named “Muffin,” drove Jackson around until the vehicle began overheating. He then stopped near 22nd Street and Tamarind Avenue, where Jackson exited and walked towards Cox’s Toyota Camry before opening fire.
Through witness statements, surveillance video, and other evidence collected at the scene Jackson was taken into custody before noon on Thursday at his apartment by WPBPD and the U.S. Marshal’s South Florida Fugitive Task Force. While Jackson denied his involvement in the shooting, he told detectives he argued with Cox hours before the murder.
Jackson was arrested and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail for first-degree murder with a firearm.
