Suspect fatally struck by car after escaping officers during arrest, Tampa police say

The Tampa Police Department said it is investigating an in-custody death in downtown Tampa on Tuesday night.

Officers said the suspect, who was not identified, was arrested on “charges related to an ongoing investigation” near North Ashley Drive and East Whiting Street just after 8 p.m.

While speaking to officers, investigators said the suspect pulled away from them while still in handcuffs and ran away.

Then, an officer deployed a taser, causing the suspect to fall into the road and into oncoming traffic, police said.

The man was then struck by a car. He died at the scene.

The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, according to Tampa police.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the in-custody death, and the Tampa Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit will investigate the crash.

North Ashley Drive was closed between East Jackson Street and East Whiting Street due to the investigation, but has since reopened.
