Suspect runs to Orlando high school after shooting, killing minor in park, deputies say

A minor was shot and killed by another minor at an Orlando park Thursday, prompting a lockdown and large law enforcement presence at a nearby high school.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office told NBC affiliate WESH the shooting happened at Vogt-Meloon Park, which is near Oak Ridge High School and the South Orlando YMCA.

The suspect ran to the high school after the shooting, and was detained by a school resource deputy, according to authorities.

Orange County Public Schools provided the following statement regarding the incident:

“Oak Ridge High School is currently on a lockdown due to a police investigation in the area of the campus. This occurred after dismissal, students and staff that remain on campus are safe. Any additional questions should be directed to law enforcement.”

The lockdown has since been lifted.

Investigators have not yet provided any further details on the circumstances leading up to the shooting, nor the identity of the minor who was killed.
