Cape Coral police said a man was caught driving at 119 mph in a 55 mph zone near 1851 NE Pine Island Road.
Overnight Thursday, at approximately 2:20 a.m., a CCPD officer was conducting radar enforcement when they saw the silver 2012 Volkswagen Jetta speeding down the road.
The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, and the suspect’s vehicle turned onto Del Prado Boulevard North.
According to a CCPD news release, that’s when the driver, later identified as JAA, 27, lost control of the vehicle, jumped a curb and crashed into a traffic sign near the intersection.
Police said A admitted to being the driver of the vehicle and told them that he lost control of it due to the vehicle’s manual transmission.
According to CCPD, A showed signs of impairment, including watery eyes and an alcohol odor.
Police said they found a concealed handgun and an alcohol-filled flask on his person when they searched him. According to the police department, another individual’s Florida driver’s license was found in his possession. CCPD said an investigation into that discovery is ongoing.
A was arrested for driving under the influence, and he refused to submit to a breath test.
CCPD said A resisted officers by bracing himself to prevent them from closing the door when they tried to put him in a patrol car.
