The man behind the wheel in a Sarasota crash that left one of his passengers dead has been arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter, authorities said Monday.
K H-A, 21, of Bradenton, was traveling “at a high rate of speed” around 2:45 a.m. on April 19 when his BMV suddenly rotated and traveled off Northgate Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Two passengers, both 21-year-old men from Bradenton, were passengers in the car at the time.
The BMW continued off the road and collided with a tree, killing one of H-A’s passengers, and leaving him and the second passenger with minor injuries, troopers said.
Officials said the man who died was riding in the backseat of the car and was not wearing a seatbelt.
Further investigation found that H-A was intoxicated while behind the wheel, and he was taken into custody about a month after the crash, according to the FHP.
