TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Police Department said one of their sergeants is recovering from serious injuries after being hit by a car while on duty on Saturday night.
The officer was working outside of Raymond James after a concert, helping direct traffic just after midnight.
He was hit by a Chrysler Crossfire, driven by a 44-year-old man, that was traveling east on W MLK Jr. Drive. TPD said the car suddenly left the center lane and went into the outside lane, where the sergeant was positioned.
Despite the fact that the sergeant was wearing a reflective vest, the driver failed to stop and struck him. He was taken to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
“I’m incredibly grateful and relieved to know that one of our officers is ok after an incident that could’ve been deadly,” Chief Lee Bercaw said. “It serves as a stark reminder that even in some of the most routine tasks, our officers risk their lives to keep our community, and in this case concert-goers, safe.”
TPD said as of Sunday morning at around 11:30, the sergeant was in stable condition and in good spirits.
The driver cooperated with the investigation and was not believed to be speeding or impaired. He received a citation for careless driving causing serious bodily injury.
