Teen driver arrested after car crashes into Vero Beach canal, just missing fishermen

An Indian River teen allegedly drove her car off a boat ramp early Sunday morning, narrowly missing two people who went fishing in the process.

Around 4 a.m., Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) deputies responded to a crash at the Oslo Road boat ramp in Vero Beach.

Upon arrival, deputies say they located C R, 19, and her Toyota Camry was partially submerged in the intercoastal waterway.

IRCSO highlighted that R narrowly missed two fishermen who jumped out of the way before she drove off the ramp.

An investigation into R’s breath alcohol level revealed she was almost twice the legal limit.

“Driving sober saves lives. Alcohol and drugs impair judgment, slow reaction time, and increase the risk of accidents. Always plan for a safe ride home,” Indian River County Sheriff’s Office reminded drivers in a post to Facebook. “Call a friend, use a rideshare service, or designate a sober driver. Your choices can make all the difference this holiday season.”
