Teen fell out of car after being shot in chest during 'play fight,' Maitland police say

A 16-year-old boy is facing attempted manslaughter and possession of a firearm charges after a 15-year-old was shot in the chest and rushed to the hospital on Saturday, the Maitland Police Department said.

The shooting happened inside a vehicle at the Grand Reserve at Maitland Park apartments, police said.

The victim was in critical condition on Monday morning.

Police said the suspect and victim were inside a black Honda Civic vehicle with two other people when the suspect pointed a black handgun at the victim.

“The victim attempted to push the gun away, and during reported ‘play fighting,’ the gun discharged, according to the first witness. A second witness said the victim fell out of the vehicle from the passenger seat,” MPD said in a news release.

Maitland police responded to the scene and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
