Teen killed in early morning crash on I-75 in Sumter County

A 19-year-old Tampa man died after a crash early Sunday morning on Interstate 75 in Sumter County.

He was driving a Honda Accord at 5:18 a.m. southbound on I-75 near Mile Marker 321 when a semi-truck tractor driven by a 35-year-old Rhode Island man, who was also southbound on I-75, experienced mechanical issues, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The semi-truck tractor, which was not towing a trailer, pulled onto the emergency shoulder. For an unknown reason, the 19-year-old’s Honda Accord also pulled onto the shoulder and collided with the semi-truck tractor. The teen suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash. The other driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
