A teenager was rushed to the hospital after they were struck by a car while riding a scooter in Oakland Park Wednesday morning, officials said.
The incident happened in the area of Northwest 5th Avenue and W. Prospect Road.
Footage from the scene showed a Toyota sedan with a smashed windshield and the scooter lying on the ground nearby.
City officials said the teen was taken to a local hospital as a level-one trauma. Broward Sheriff’s Office officials said the injuries weren’t life threatening.
The driver spoke with NBC6 and said she had a green light and tried to avoid the teen girl but it was too late.
She said she was shaken up but wasn’t physically hurt.
“I’m still traumatized,” she said. “Right before it happened, I pretty much braked, but at that time, she just, as she’s going, she got hit.”
The driver said she stepped out of the car to make sure the teen was okay.
“She was able to sit up, she was able to actually stand up, so that’s a good thing,” she said. “I mean if I could have done anything to avoid it I would have, but at that point it was already too late.”
Witness R said she was at work when she heard the crash from inside her office just before 7:15 a.m.
“It just sounded like two cars colliding, like it was loud,” R said.
R said she rushed outside and saw the bloodied teen on the pavement.
“I just felt bad, I told her, I started screaming not to move ’cause she was trying to move and she was on the floor,” R said. “Bad, bad.”
BSO officials said the incident remains under investigation.
