Tesla driver accused of going over 100 mph, knocking vehicle off bridge faces new charges

The man accused of seriously injuring two people last month when his speeding Tesla slammed into their vehicle and knocked it off Roosevelt Bridge faces three new charges, the Stuart Police Department (SPD) revealed.

Court records show Adam Alaoui had already faced two charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury. On Friday, SPD reported two counts of DUI with serious bodily injury and a single allegation of DUI causing property damage have been added. Alaoui was arrested Sunday after turning himself in.

According to an arrest affidavit, officers originally responded around 5 p.m. on July 8 to a report that the Toyota went over the railing and into the water, but soon discovered the vehicle landed into the parking lot of the Harborage. The passenger had been thrown from the vehicle and found lying under the vehicle’s window frame, while the driver was not moving, officers stated.

They were both airlifted to Lawnwood Hospital, having suffered multiple lacerations and possible internal injuries, the affidavit noted.

The officers located a witness who recounted seeing the white Tesla heading north on the bridge at over 100 mph when it sideswiped the Toyota, which then rolled and went over the railing, the report continued. According to the witness, the driver of the Tesla did not stop and fled the scene of the crash.

Investigators were able to determine who owned the Tesla and found it at the Axis One Apartments, off Northwest Federal Highway. They indicated the vehicle was heavily damaged and missing a tire. Investigators also pointed out that there were gouges in the road on the bridge, on the highway, and at the entrance to the complex.

Noticing that a patio light had been turned on, officers spotted a person matching the description of the man they were looking for run back into an apartment, the report stated. When they went to the apartment, Alaoui and passenger were both there.

According to the affidavit, the passenger told investigators they were drinking in West Palm Beach that day and he was driving her home when the accident happened. She reportedly told officers that she urged him to stop multiple times, and he said not to worry about it. She also claimed that Alaoui did not want her to answer the door when the officers were knocking and asked her not to mention that he was driving.

That original report did not include any details from Alaoui saying he “was unable to answer officers’ questions due to his intoxication level.” Because of his condition, Fire Rescue was called to take him to the hospital.
