A two-year-old boy shot himself in the hand after a loaded handgun was left unattended on a couch, prompting the arrest of the gun owner.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) said that on Monday, deputies responded to Lakeside Medical Center after a report of an accidental injury.
Upon arrival, deputies reported finding the three-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his left hand. He told a Department of Children and Families (DCF) investigator, “I shot it with a gun! I shot myself.” The boy continued to state that the gun was left on the couch.
The gun owner, JM, 24, told PBSO deputies that he kept the handgun for protection, believing someone may want to harm him or his family.
He continued to state that typically, he stores the gun in a snap-sealed box when visiting with children, but he forgot to do so this time, leaving it on the couch while he stepped outside to talk with friends.
M has been accused of child neglect with great bodily harm, along with leaving a loaded firearm accessible to a minor, resulting in injury.
