A deadly crash shut down all southbound lanes of I-295 on the Buckman Bridge headed toward Mandarin during rush hour Monday morning.
Hours later, traffic was still being diverted onto U.S. 17 and Blanding Boulevard.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 28-year-old man driving a pickup truck hit the back of a box truck that was disabled in the left emergency lane south of U.S. 17 on the Buckman Bridge.
The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt, according to the crash report.
The 43-year-old man from Tampa who was driving the box truck was not hurt.
The crash was first reported at 6 a.m. Monday, and emergency vehicles were still on the bridge surveying the “complex investigation” as of 11 a.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol said extensive traffic delays are expected for the foreseeable future, and drivers are asked to plan for extra time and seek alternative routes.
