TRAFFIC ALERT: Tractor-trailer overturns, spilling pipes onto I-95 in Volusia

A tractor-trailer overturned and spilled its load after sideswiping another vehicle early Wednesday on Interstate 95 in Volusia County, prompting the closure of the interstate, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened around 4:20 a.m. on I-95 south at mile marker 235 near Oak Hill. The interstate was shut down in both directions, but traffic cameras later showed vehicles getting by on the shoulders.

The FHP said the big rig was southbound on I-95 when it veered into the center lane, striking a 2024 GMC Savana that was pulling a trailer hauling a 2008 Toyota RAV4.

Both vehicles ran off the road, and the tractor-trailer overturned, spilling plastic pipes onto the interstate, the FHP said.

A 2003 Nissan 350Z then struck the pipes, according to troopers.

The big rig driver was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach with non-life-threatening injuries, the FHP said.

The GMC driver, a 59-year-old North Carolina woman, and her passenger, a 70-year-old Miami woman, were not hurt. The Nissan driver was also uninjured.

Southbound lanes are blocked by the overturned semitrailer and pipes, and northbound lanes are closed due to a fuel leak from the big rig. Traffic, however, is passing on the shoulders in either direction.

No other details have been released.
