St. Lucie County deputies responded Tuesday morning to a car found submerged in a canal near the intersection of Orange Avenue and North Rim Ditch Road, about 13 miles west of Fort Pierce. The discovery prompted a road closure and a multi-agency investigation.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), workers with the South Florida Water Management District spotted the vehicle around 10:50 a.m. while performing maintenance near the canal. The car, a Nissan rental with Mississippi license plates, was found with the bodies of two adult women in the backseat.

According to FHP, the women — who were dating and lived in the area — had reportedly spent the weekend in Miami and were returning home when their vehicle left the road and entered the canal sometime after midnight early Monday morning. The reason for the crash remains unknown. The women’s identities were not disclosed, but one was from Fort Pierce and the other Okeechobee.

FHP says foul play is not suspected. Due to the presence of alligators in the canal, a law enforcement officer stood by with a rifle while divers worked to recover the vehicle using a tow truck.

Orange Avenue remains closed between Sneed Road and the Okeechobee/St. Lucie County line and is expected to reopen in about two hours. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes. The investigation is ongoing.
