A UCF professor was arrested last week after he chased a student riding an e-bike in Oviedo and knocked his helmet off his head, according to police.
In an arrest affidavit, police said that the incident happened the morning of Oct. 14 near the Oviedo Aquatic Center.
The student said he was riding his e-bike to school when a man — identified as SSP, 41 — called out to him to slow down, according to Oviedo police.
The affidavit states that the student refused to slow down, however, and P reportedly followed him to Jackson Heights Middle School and eventually grabbed his arm.
The student told P to let him go, but P instead smacked the helmet off his head and struck him, police said.
The student’s friend was eventually able to get between them to stop the scuffle, police noted.
P then pushed the student’s friend and purportedly continued toward him “in an aggressive manner” before school staff were able to intervene and diffuse the situation, the affidavit says.
“In his statement, Sean admitted to chasing (the student) after telling him to stop riding his bike,” the affidavit reads. “He also advised he followed him to Jackson Heights Middle School, identified him, and requested (that the student) apologize.”
P was arrested on charges of trespassing on school grounds and two counts of battery.
P is listed on UCF’s website as a professor at the College of Optics and Photonics.
UCF on Tuesday said P was placed on paid administrative leave as the university “follows our processes and reviews this matter.”
P’s arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 18.
