Authorities are releasing more details about a weekend crash that left a motorcyclist dead on US-41 near Bayshore Drive.
The crash happened just after 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Florida Highway Patrol troopers said both vehicles were heading south on US-41, with the motorcycle in the left lane and the car in the right lane.
The driver of the car made a left turn from the right lane, crossing into the motorcycle’s path. The two collided and the motorcyclist was killed.
The crash shut down lanes for about three hours.
Florida Highway Patrol said crashes like this become more common this time of year because more people are on the roads.
“We do see an uptick with our crashes, and it’s simply because there are so many more people here visiting, which creates more opportunities for bad things to happen,” a trooper said. “That’s why it’s incumbent upon us to remember that driving, in fact, is a responsibility. Must be taken seriously.”
