VIDEO: 1 dead after wrong-way fiery 4-car crash on I-275 in Tampa

The Florida Highway Patrol said a wrong-way driver was the cause of a fatal, fiery crash on northbound I-275 in Tampa Friday night.

A 21-year-old Tampa man was driving a Chevy Silverado, traveling the wrong way on north I-275 just past Busch Boulevard at around 9:15 p.m, authorities said.

He collided nearly head-on with a Toyota Corolla driven by a 24-year-old Tampa man, who suffered fatal injuries at the scene.

The Chevy then overturned multiple times before catching fire.

The Corolla also overturned, and the force of the collision sent it barreling into a third vehicle, a Toyota Camry driven by a 26-year-old Wesley Chapel man. That vehicle collided with a fourth vehicle, another Toyota Camry, driven by a 38-year-old Tampa man.

The drivers of the third and fourth vehicles were not injured in the crash, FHP said.

The wrong-way driver, who has not been publicly identified, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

FHP also said that, before the 9:15 p.m. crash on I-275, the Chevy driver was involved in two separate hit-and-runs, one that occurred along Fowler Avenue and one that occurred south of Fowler.

No information was released about the details of those two crashes or if anyone was injured.

FHP said criminal charges are pending for the Chevy driver.
