Waldo man arrested for strangling woman, taking her phone

Waldo man arrested for strangling woman, taking her phone

Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man in Waldo on Saturday on charges of battery by strangulation and hindering a victim from calling 911.

They say JM, 26, strangled and pushed the victim into the stove of the kitchen during an argument on Sept. 13. She was unable to breathe and suffered several cuts and scratches to her neck.

According to the police report, M and the victim were in a relationship and have lived together in the past.

The victim told deputies that she did not call law enforcement sooner because M took her phone after the incident, and he would keep her phone for long periods of time until she had calmed down.

Deputies say they found a dent in the stove and several holes in the walls and door of the apartment from prior incidents.

M was arrested and taken to the Alachua County Jail without incident.
