Walton County Fire Rescue responded to a call regarding a Darlington house engulfed in flames Thursday afternoon.
According to WCFR, first responders from Walton County Fire Rescue and Walton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence on Highway 2 West after a passing motorist reported the fire. The homeowner was able to make it out safely before first responders arrived.
Officials say approximately 70% of the residence was on fire; crews immediately began to extinguish the fire with the help of Liberty and Argyle volunteer fire districts.
The house sustained extensive damage, and the owner told crews that the fire started while he was attempting to light a wood-burning heater inside the home.
The owner had minor burns, but declined treatment and assistance from the American Red Cross, stating he had belongings at a nearby family member’s house.
