Who is Carlos Baez Nieves? Florida man named as ‘possible serial killer’

A Florida man who is a “potential serial killer” and allegedly strangled two women to death while having sex with them was indicted on murder charges this week.

Carlos Baez Nieves, 25, was indicted by an Orange County grand jury Wednesday on two counts of first-degree murder for the brutal deaths of Fatia Flowers, 44, in March and Nichole Daniels, 41, in April, the state Attorney Andrew Bain’s office said in a news release.

Nieves was also charged with two counts of tampering with physical evidence in a capital proceeding and one count of driving with a suspended license. His trial is set for September.

On separate occasions, Nieves allegedly picked up Flowers and Daniels, both transient women, at a 7-Eleven and paid them for sex, Orange County Sheriff John Mina said in a news conference in April.

Nieves strangled both women during sex and then dumped their naked bodies on the side of the road in east Orlando.

Flowers’ body was discovered on March 14 and five weeks later, Daniels’ body was found near the same location on April 17.

Nieves was the primary suspect in both killings and was arrested on two counts of first-degree murder on April 26.

Officials say Nieves first told investigators that he dropped Daniels off alive at another location when questioned after his arrest. He eventually admitted to dumping her body. Nieves said he strangled Daniels after an argument because he thought she took money out of his wallet, officials said.

He also admitted to killing Flowers, Mina said, claiming he accidentally strangled her while choking her during sex.

“I’m very confident because of our detectives’ relentless efforts in this case that they stopped Baez-Nieves from becoming a prolific serial killer,” Mina said in April. “He targeted women who he clearly thought would not be missed. He murdered them and dumped their bodies on the side of the road like they were trash.”

Investigators revealed that Baez-Nieves came from Puerto Rico the the United States in 2020. They believe he could have committed other murders.

“I think this is a person who’s clearly capable of doing this and may have done it in the past,” Mina said.

Serial killers targeting sex workers is “very common,” forensic psychiatrist Dr. Sanjay Adhia recently told Newsweek.

“I believe the reason that sex workers are targeted is a lot of people wouldn’t be alarmed if they’re missing also, they’re thought of as being vulnerable,” Adhia said. “The police don’t have infinite resources so they would not focus on if they found out a sex worker is missing. It’s not going to be the top of their to do list.”
