The widow of an Alabama man who died on the operating table of a Northwest Florida hospital — allegedly because the doctor removed the wrong organ and the man bled out — is suing everyone she believes was involved in her husband’s death.
WEAR News reported last September about the death of 70-year-old veteran WB at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in Miramar Beach last August.
The surgeon accused of the wrongdoing is Dr. TS, who has since had his medical license suspended in Florida and removed in Alabama. He’s included in the lawsuit, along with the nurses who provided care, among others.
The widow, BB, held a press conference Thursday afternoon with her lawyer JZ. They went through the nearly 500 page lawsuit, saying they want to provide transparency to the incident.
The lawsuit lists several occasions where Dr. S allegedly made critical mistakes during surgery prior to BB’s wrong-site surgery.
“It’s very disheartening to think in a hospital, in a place that you think you’re safe and people are caring for you in a hospital, would not be trustworthy,” BB said.
During an operation — a splenectomy operation back in August 2024 — Dr. S removed Mr. B’s liver instead of his spleen and Mr. B died pretty instantaneously on the operating table,” Z said.
The suit alleges medical negligence and other wrongdoing.
Z says following Bill Bryan’s death, everyone involved went into cover up mode.
Z claims hospital staff filled out state-required forms intentionally falsifying the cause of the death.
Then, Z alleges the hospital’s CEO, chief medical officer and past or present president of the medical staff got together immediately after the surgery. The suit alleges they have the pictures to prove it.
“We have footage of all these people around the operating room — meeting, talking,” Z said. “We can’t hear what they’re saying, but immediately following these meetings, they then go meet with Mrs. B and they tell her that your husband died from a splenic artery aneurism and they tell the medical examiner offices the same thing.”
The suit also alleges Dr. S invoked intentional emotional distress on BB.
The suit shows Dr. S allegedly sent a text message to BB at 8:04 p.m. — a little over an hour after her husband’s death. The text read: “I’m praying for you and your family”
A day later, the suit claims Dr. S continued to text the widow, writing: “I know he’s in a better place. He was a wonderful person and I know he’s with the lord now.”
“I just thought it was weird at the time because I mean, we didn’t know him,” BB said. “Maybe he was gonna try to make some excuse, I don’t know, but he lied about it initially.”
“I don’t think his intentions were good,” she added.
A statement from Ascension Sacred Heart says: “Our organization does not discuss active litigation and has no comments to provide.”
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office says there is an ongoing criminal investigation.
We have not heard back from GenesisCare US of Florida.
BB left behind three children and eight grandchildren.
