A Wilton Manors man is set to appear in court for a bond hearing on Friday after police said he abused an 81-year-old woman to the point where she suffered a concussion and had her living in “poor” conditions.
Officers with the Wilton Manors Police Department arrested CAR, 63, on Sunday at his apartment in the 3000 block of North Andrews Avenue. He faces charges of aggravated abuse of an elderly or disabled adult and aggravated battery on a person 65 or older.
Police said R has known the victim for at least 15 years. They said on Feb. 7, he hit the woman, causing “visible injuries.”
WMPD Officer CB wrote in an arrest report that her injuries included “a bruise and swelling on her forehead,” as well as a black eye and “severe discoloration around the affected area.”
“Additionally, officers noted that her pupils were unequal and she reported experiencing memory loss,” Bernstein wrote. “She also had multiple bumps on her head and complained of soreness in her hips.”
Doctors determined the woman suffered a concussion, police said. B wrote that the victim told officers that R has hit her “multiple times throughout knowing him” and said she is “afraid of him.”
Police said the senior was also left to live in squalor.
“She has no power in her apartment and has been unable to store food for months,” B wrote. “She stated that (R) frequently steals food and leaves it to spoil. Officers observed that the only light source in the apartment was a small battery-powered light.”
R was being held without bond in the Broward Main Jail as of Thursday, awaiting Friday’s hearing.
