Winter Haven firefighters rescued a sleeping mom and her 4-year-old daughter from a house fire early Wednesday.
The Winter Haven Fire Department and Winter Haven police officers were called to a fire on 11th Street South Southeast just before 1:30 a.m. after a neighbor reported seeing flames coming from the house.
Crews said the fire was shooting through the roof at the back of the house when they arrived.
Firefighters said they breached the front door and heavy smoke billowed out of the home. They located the mother just inside of an interior door. They said she was disoriented and unaware of the fire. The mother and her daughter had been asleep in the front part of the house.
When firefighters told the mother her house was on fire, she screamed about her daughter and ran back into the house to find her. Firefighters said they ran after the mom and safely got them out of the home.
No one was hurt.
“Our highly-trained firefighters ran into an extremely dangerous situation to rescue this mother and daughter and, no doubt, saved their lives,” said Fire Chief Sonny Emery. “I applaud the neighbor for the immediate call at the early-morning hour when most people are asleep.”
Firefighters said the mother and daughter will be staying with family members and the Red Cross has been notified for additional assistance.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and is under investigation.
