Four people, including two teens, were shot in Jacksonville as New Year’s celebrations were underway Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.
Those were the result of three separate shootings spread across the Jacksonville area.
That includes a shooting near Friendship Fountain.
JSO said it heard the gunshots because officers were working security at last night’s fireworks display Downtown.
All of these shootings happened within two hours of each other. But we know that all four victims are expected to survive.
One shooting happened at around 12:30 a.m. near Friendship Fountain.
JSO off-duty officers working the New Year’s Eve celebration and heard multiple gunshots near the Fountain.
They found two teenagers, a 14 and 17-year-old, both shot at least once, but they’re expected to recover.
A 19-year-old suspect was detained and interviewed.
But JSO did say it’s possibly gang-related.
“Gun violence is horrific. It eats away at society, erodes freedom. But you know the robbery/violent crimes detectives are out there doing a fantastic job and they should bring these individuals to justice,” said Sgt. Frederick Dash with JSO’s Robbery and Violent Crimes division.
Michael Thomas was there and heard the gunshots.
“I was facing the water and the shots rang out and I didn’t see anyone, but it was so close that I felt it,” Thomas said.
He said people began to panic and rush toward an exit.
“It’s just unfortunate that people were just trying to have a good time and then just some childish stuff has to happen,” he said.
There were also two other incidents overnight.
