Woman accused of DUI after head-on collision injures child in Port St. Lucie

A woman traveling with two small children in her car is behind bars after she was found to be drunk during a head-on collision in Port St. Lucie.

As a result of the collision, a five-year-old was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital with serious injuries.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) says the crash happened on Saturday at around 3:53 p.m. near SW Savona Blvd. The investigation found that a man was driving a Nissan Pathfinder northbound on Savona Blvd and a Kia Telluride, driven by A MC, was heading south.

As the two vehicles approached each other, the Kia Telluride veered into the path of the Nissan, causing a crash. The five-year-old C was traveling with suffered serious injuries, while a seven-year-old in the vehicle was uninjured. The children along with C, 37, were taken to a local hospital.

Police say the driver of the Nissan was also taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. During PSLPD’s crash investigation, first responders said they could smell alcohol on C’s breath and when she spoke with officers she swayed. After she was medically cleared from the hospital officers began a DUI investigation.

Photos show extensive damage to the front ends of both cars due to the head-on collision. Another photo shows the backseat of C’s car which holds two car seats.

Police say during their investigation; C refused to take a sobriety test and give a sample of her breath for testing. Her refusal led to officers to place her under arrest.

Police say C passively resisted officers’ attempts to handcuff her by refusing to place her hands behind her back and refusing to be placed in the patrol car.

She was booked on counts of DUI with serious bodily injury to another, child neglect without great bodily harm, child neglect with bodily harm and resisting an officer without violence.
