Woman accused of firing gunshot at father of her child in southwest Miami-Dade

A woman is facing a first-degree attempted murder charge for allegedly firing a gunshot at the father of her child while he was walking with his two children last month in southwest Miami-Dade.

According to Miami-Dade police, Travonna Lashay Bowens, 36, called the victim on his cellphone while he was walking with his children near the 10000 block of Southwest 160th Street, just before 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 23.

That’s when police said Bowens then drove to meet him in her vehicle after learning his location.

The victim’s children reported that upon Bowens’ arrival, she accelerated her vehicle towards the victim, prompting him to push himself away to avoid being struck, an arrest report stated.

After Bowens parked her vehicle, the victim approached her side where she retrieved a gun from the glove compartment and said, “Stop playing with me about my child!” according to the report.

Police said Bowens squeezed the trigger after pointing the gun at the victim but found that it was unloaded. Subsequently, the victim managed to disarm Bowens.

Moments later, authorities said Bowens drove towards the victim’s residence and awaited his return, allegedly attempting to seize the gun from his back pocket upon his arrival, but without success.

In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, the victim relinquished custody of their child to Bowens, who fled the scene before police arrived, according to the report.

Bowens’ arrest report states that voluntarily surrendered herself to police around 1:45 a.m. on Tuesday. Upon her surrender, she immediately invoked her Miranda rights at the MDPD’s special victims unit.

As of Tuesday, Bowens is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
