A Fruitland Park woman was arrested for battery after allegedly jabbing a man with car keys when he tried to stop her from drunk driving.
On Feb. 2, a male victim and 69-year-old Judy Caldwell were drinking alcoholic beverages, according to an affidavit of probable cause out of Lake County. An argument ensued, and she tried to leave in their vehicle.
The victim attempted to stop Caldwell from drunk driving, but she became violent and attacked him. He then called law enforcement to the scene. He believed that due to Florida law, one of them would go to jail, so he left the residence, the affidavit said.
On Feb. 4, a detective with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office reviewed body cam footage from deputies who responded to Caldwell’s call for service. Caldwell advised that the victim threw her on the ground and held her down with his body weight. There was fresh blood on the scene that she stated was from her defending herself, the affidavit said.
However, Caldwell did not have any injuries, marks or bruises. Due to the victim not being present, Caldwell’s lack of injuries and fresh blood on scene, the initial responding deputies were unable to determine a primary aggressor, the affidavit said.
On Feb. 5, the detective met with the victim at the residence and incident location. He sustained significant scratch marks to both sides of his face, neck, chest and right arm. He also had a bruise to his right arm from Caldwell trying to stab him with the vehicle keys, the affidavit said.
Caldwell was ultimately arrested Monday, Feb. 10, on a warrant charging him with simple battery (domestic). He was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $500 bond.
