Woman behind bars after shooting boyfriend, barricading herself inside Hobe Sound apartment

A woman has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after shooting her boyfriend and barricading herself inside an apartment Friday morning in Martin County.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, it happened in the Hobe Heights neighborhood of Hobe Sound.

The victim was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital. Chief Deputy John Budensiek says the man was conscious and breathing when he was taken to the hospital.

“Despite the gunshot wound, his injuries are said to be non-life-threatening,” MCSO officials said.

The MCSO SWAT Team, negotiators, and multiple units set up a perimeter around the apartment where the shooting happened, located on the 9100 block of SE Parkway Drive. Budensiek says crisis negotiators were unable to make contact with the suspect, who has been identified as 46-year-old Jessica Sukmana, for about an hour. At that point, officials say the SWAT team used gas to force Sukmana out of the apartment, where she was detained.

Investigators say the victim, who is not being identified, was shot in the lower abdomen and then ran to a nearby residence where neighbors rendered aid.

“You’ve got to help your neighbor, honestly, even if you don’t know them,” said David Cram, one of the neighbors who stepped in to help. “It’s human nature to want to help people, at least I would think so, if you’re a decent human being. I don’t know, it’s just natural instinct.”

“I wouldn’t want to be left laying there if I was laying there,” said Kevin Fryer, who also acted as a good Samaritan to render aid to the victim following the shooting.

Budensiek says Sukmana recently posted about having mental health issues on social media.

“We’ve been going through social media, she has mentioned mental illness,” said Budensiek. “She has had some issues with mental illness in the past. That certainly is a component of this.”

He also commends the work his team did on Friday morning.

“They were able to get her out safely so we accomplished that mission of getting her into custody, our people are safe and the community is safe and we’re proud of the work that they do,” said Budensiek.

This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
