Woman dies after being struck by car in Arlington neighborhood

A woman is dead after being struck by a car Friday night in Jacksonville’s Arlington neighborhood, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened at 9 p.m. on University Boulevard North near Wiltshire Street.

Police said a Buick was heading south on University Boulevard North in the inside lane as a woman was crossing the road walking westbound.

The driver, a man in his late 20s, saw that the woman was in the center turn lane and as he approached the woman stepped out into the southbound lanes where the car struck her.

JSO said the driver stopped and tried to help the woman who was in her mid-20s.

Jacksonville Fire Rescue transported the woman to a local hospital where she died shortly after arrival. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. There are no signs of driver impairment.

This is the 159th traffic fatality this year in Duval County and the 45th involving a pedestrian.
