Woman dies after crashing into the back of a semi in Bartow

A 24-year-old woman died after crashing into the back of a semi tractor-trailer in Bartow around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office announced.

According to PCSO, the woman appeared to be driving south on US Highway 17 in a 2013 Honda CRV when she approached the intersection at Ernest Smith Boulevard, which had a red light.

She then crashed into the back of a 2019 Freightliner semi-truck with an empty trailer that was stopped for the red light.

The SUV rotated 90 degrees to the west and came to a stop in the right turn lane of Highway 17, PCSO said.

According to PCSO, the woman driving the Honda CRV and the passenger, her 2-year-old daughter had to be extricated from the vehicle by Polk County Fire Rescue.

The child was airlifted to Tampa due to her age but suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover.

Her mother, the driver of the SUV was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.

The 36-year-old driver of the semi was not injured.

Both drivers and the child were properly restrained within their vehicles.
