Woman killed, 7-month-old taken to hospital after crash near St. Lucie County

A 54-year-old woman was killed and a baby boy was taken to the hospital after a single-vehicle crash in unincorporated St. Lucie County on Tuesday afternoon.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said the woman was driving a 2013 Ford Edge along South Brocksmith Road, just north of State Road 70.

According to the crash report, the woman left the roadway, heading onto the northbound grass shoulder. The front of the Ford then collided with a mailbox and overturned.

The overturned SUV continued to travel along the grass shoulder until it hit a wooden fence, FHP said. The SUV finally came to a stop on its roof.

The woman wasn’t the only person inside the vehicle. According to the crash report, a 7-month-old boy was inside the SUV.

FHP said the baby boy and the woman were rushed to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce for treatment. Tragically, the woman was later pronounced dead.

The crash report did not disclose further details on the baby’s condition.
