Woman killed in crossfire during shooting at Merritt Island apartments, deputies say

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly shooting at an apartment complex early Friday morning.

At 12:30 a.m., deputies were called out to the Tropical Manor Apartments on Jordan Road in Merritt Island regarding a “large disturbance.”

Upon arrival, the deputies were told that a woman had been shot. The victim, identified as 36-year-old Tasha Smith of Merritt Island, was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Preliminary findings suggest the incident began as an altercation in the parking lot, which escalated into gunfire between two men. Smith, who was not involved in the fight, was shot while in the vicinity. Investigators do not believe she was the intended target.

Sheriff’s office agents from the General Crimes, Homicide, and Crime Scene Units are interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Agent Vince Bustillo of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit at 321-633-8413, or CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477). Callers to CRIMELINE can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
