A 72-year-old woman was killed and several others were injured after a crash in Port St. Lucie on Memorial Day.
The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) said the collision occurred around 1:30 p.m. on May 26, when a 2011 BMW convertible, driven by a 74-year-old Port St. Lucie man, was traveling southbound on NW Glades Cut Off Road. At the same time, a 2023 Kia, driven by a 24-year-old Fort Pierce woman, was heading westbound on NW Commerce Center Drive.
Initial investigation suggests that the driver of the Kia failed to yield the right of way to the BMW, which caused a crash, according to the arrest report.
Both the driver and passenger of the BMW were transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital. Sadly, the passenger, Joan Latowski, was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the driver remains in critical condition.
The driver and three passengers of the Kia were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to PSLPD.
Police said there was no indication of impairment in either driver, and the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has video footage to contact Traffic Homicide Investigator Officer Brian Thompson at (772) 871-5001 or Treasure Coast Crimestoppers at (800) 273-8477.
