Woman shot in arm by deputy during traffic stop in Fort Myers, drove self to hospital

Deputies said a woman was shot once in the elbow by a deputy during a traffic stop on Boy Scout Drive in Fort Myers Friday morning.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect is accused of trying to leave a traffic stop near US-41 and Boy Scout Drive around 11 a.m. while a deputy was attempting to serve a felony warrant.

The deputy pulled over the driver on Boy Scout Drive at Red Cedar Drive in front of the Ford dealership entrance.

During a news conference, Sheriff Carmine Marceno said a deputy fired a single shot, hitting the woman in the elbow. She then drove herself to Lee Memorial Hospital with what he said were non-life-threatening injuries.

Fort Myers police officers met the woman at the hospital’s ER.

Gulf Coast News was at the scene, and at least 17 deputy vehicles could be seen. K-9 units were also on scene, and crime scene tape was up.

The deputy involved is being put on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing, which is standard practice in any deputy-involved shooting.
