Woman struck, killed along I-4 in Hillsborough County was looking for lost cellphone, FHP says

A 23-year-old Davenport woman was struck and killed by a car Friday night after looking for her cellphone along the shoulder of Interstate 4 near Plant City, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. on eastbound State Road 400 (I-4), west of State Road 39, troopers said.

According to a preliminary FHP crash report, the Davenport woman had stopped her pickup truck on the shoulder of S.R. 400 and began walking along the shoulder in search of her cellphone, which had fallen from the vehicle.

After finding the phone, she stepped into the path of a sedan — which was being driven eastbound by a 34-year-old Brandon woman — and was struck by it as a result, the report states.

The Davenport woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash while the Brandon woman was not injured, troopers said.
