Police are investigating after a young woman was struck and killed by a private school bus in Sweetwater Wednesday morning.
The incident happened in the area of Southwest 2nd Street and 109th Avenue. Surveillance video showed the bus turning right on Southwest 3rd Street moments before the accident.
Aerial footage showed a yellow tarp in the roadway next to the bus.
Police identified the woman as A P, a 22-year-old who had graduated from Florida International University this past summer.
Miami-Dade Police officials said the bus stayed at the scene and homicide detectives were responding to investigate.
“The bus remained in the roadway the entire time this incident occurred. The bus did not travel onto the sidewalk. So they are currently here on scene processing for evidence that can give us some insight into how this tragedy occurred,” Miami-Dade Police Det. Andre Martin said.
Police added that nine children were on the bus when the pedestrian was struck. None of the students were injured and they were picked up by another bus.
Traffic was being blocked on Southwest 109th Avenue while the incident was investigated.
