‘Worst nightmare’: 3-year-old fatally hit by car near Tampa while riding bike with his family

A 3-year-old was hit and killed by a car Thursday evening near Tampa while he was riding his bike with his family, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The child was hit at about 7 p.m. in the 7500 block of Pitch Pine Circle, deputies said. The child died at the scene.

The child was riding his bike through a residential area with his siblings and family right behind him when an SUV hit the child while turning a corner, officials said.

“That mom is going through the worst nightmare,” HCSO spokesperson Jessica Lang said.

Speed and impairment are not believed to be factors, and currently there will be no criminal charges.

The driver of the SUV stayed at the scene and is cooperating.

“Our deputies’ goal in any situation is to serve and protect, and unfortunately when they arrived to the scene, all they could do was pray,” Lang said. “Our deputies are moms, they’re dads, and to see a child who is deceased by an unfortunate and tragic accident is heartbreaking.”
