Both the Marion County Sheriff’s deputy and the suspect wounded in a deputy-involved shooting were released from the hospital on Monday morning.
Sheriff’s office officials say a deputy pulled over R H, 22, around 2:30 a.m. Monday on Southeast 161st Street in Summerfield. She was arrested for driving with a suspended license, providing false ID, and drug possession.
While being taken to jail in the back of the patrol car, H pulled out a small-caliber handgun she’d concealed in her pants and fired at the deputy, wounding him. He returned fire, injuring her.
A bullet grazed the deputy’s face. H suffered injuries to her shoulders and hip area.
Hours later, both were released from the hospital after receiving treatment for their injuries.
“It’s not surprising that it’s an officer-involved shooting because lately in multiple counties around the state of Florida, there have definitely been a lot of shootings, but for it to happen so close to where I’m staying, it is shocking,” said WW, a resident.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been notified of the incident and is investigating the shooting.
H is being held in the Marion County Jail without bond.
