A car crash on Veterans Parkway in Cape Coral left one person dead, with a witness recounting the tragic events and her efforts to save the driver.
The Cape Coral Police Department has confirmed that one person died after a car crashed near the median along Veterans Parkway and SW 20th Avenue.
The crash site showed fresh tire marks, scattered debris, and mangled branches as investigators worked to determine the cause of the accident.
G, a Cape Coral resident, said she witnessed the crash late at night.
“It was almost 1:00 in the morning that I left from out there, but I called 911 at 10:55,” G said.
G explained that she was driving home with her son after a long day of wrestling tournaments and back-to-school shopping when she saw a car speed past her on Veterans Parkway and SW 20th Avenue with no lights on. Moments later, she said, the back of the car began to swerve before the driver lost control.
“The only thing you can see is like the drive lights, the little orange yellow lights and, you can see where he was trying to slam on brakes and all of the smoke and screeching. And I just seen his car hit the median. When it hit the median, it bounced up and it hit the tree, and I see a big object fly at the car. But at that moment, I didn’t realize it was him,” G said.
G, a medical assistant currently studying to become a nurse, said she immediately sprang into action alongside another good Samaritan as the car burst into flames.
She said they found the driver about 30 feet from the crash site and began searching for a pulse and performing chest compressions while waiting for medical assistance to arrive.
“Then I didn’t feel it again and started compressions and, you know, holding his head. That way we can at least try to and I remember just the car was still on fire, and you can hear all of the crackling in the car, and it sounded like it wanted to just explode,” G said.
Still shaken by the experience, G said she empathizes deeply with the victim’s family.
“I would never want to get woke up in the middle of a night to a call saying, this happened to your child. I will lose my mind. I lost my mind last night for somebody else’s child,” she said.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
The investigation blocked off both directions of Veterans Parkway until later on Sunday morning. The road has since reopened.
