The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting in Spring Hill.
Deputies responded to a shooting at the 10000 block of Fordham Street around 6 a.m. Tuesday.
HCSO received a call about 15-20 gunshots being fired in the area, with people in the street.
Sheriff Al Nienhuis said a person who lived in the area went over to a neighbor’s house and was in the front yard.
The homeowner, who initially did not recognize the person, grabbed his firearm and went outside.
The person who approached the home wanted to hang out, but the homeowner said he needed to “get out of here.”
As the homeowner began to turn around and go back inside his house, the person began shooting at the homeowner, the Sheriff said.
Fortunately, that individual did arm themselves because they didn’t know who it was, turned around and started returning fire, kind of a shootout ensued on Fordham Street,” Sheriff Nienhuis said.
Sheriff Nienhuis said when deputies first arrived at the home, they got another call saying a body was lying in the front yard of a house a few blocks away.
According to Sheriff Al Nienhuis, the body in the front yard of the house a few blocks away was a Halloween decoration.
The person shot was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
