A 19-year-old and a 20-year-old were killed in a crash Monday night near the University of South Florida, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Police believe “excessive speed” was a main factor in the crash.

20-year-old Fernandez D’Oleo was driving east on East Bougainvillea Avenue near McKinley Drive when he tried to swerve around slowed traffic by moving into lanes of oncoming traffic, police said.

D’Oleo side-swiped a vehicle that was turning at the intersection and lost control of the car, police said. The car hit a cement power pole.

D’Oleo and the passenger, Victoria Mohammed Annause, 19, died at the scene of the crash, according to police.

The crash remains under investigation.
