2 dead, 2 Palm Bay officers wounded in shootout after domestic disturbance

Officers expected to survive; Suspect ID’s as Brandon Pappas

Two people were killed and two Palm Bay officers were wounded Sunday afternoon in a shooting following a domestic incident, police said.

WKMG reports Palm Bay Police Chief Mariano Augello said during a news conference that officers responded to the 400 block of Forgal Avenue NE for a domestic disturbance.

Augello said officers encountered the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Brandon Pappas, which resulted in an exchange of gunfire. Police have not yet confirmed the spelling of the suspect’s name.

Two Palm Bay police officers were shot and taken to the hospital, according to Augello. Details about the officers’ injuries were not released.

“They are going to survive. Mr. Pappas, however, is deceased as a direct result of his actions towards our officers,” Augello said.

Augello added that a second person was also dead “as a result of Mr. Pappas’ direct actions,” but the police chief did not provide any additional details about the second victim who died or the manner of death.

After Pappas shot and injured the two officers, he fled the scene and was chased by police, Augello said.

“We pursued him to ensure our citizens were safe,” Augello said.

The police department used social media to ask residents to avoid the area of Lexington and Americana in northeast Palm Bay.

There was no threat to the public, police said in the post.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an investigation into the shooting.
