Three people have been displaced from their homes after a fire erupted Tuesday morning at a mobile home park in Hallandale Beach, first responders confirmed.
According to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, the fire was reported at about 4:45 a.m. at the Eastwood Mobile Home Park, across the street from Gulfstream Park.
A spokesperson from the fire department said about 40 firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the mobile homes.
“Two adjacent mobile homes also sustained flame impingement from the primary structure,” the spokesperson said in an email to Local 10 News.
One of the victims, Vasyl Shkavolyak, showed Local 10 News the only possessions he has left – of all which fit into a single plastic bag.
The 79-year-old Ukrainian national believes he escaped death when his mobile home in went up in flames.
He said he smelled smoke shortly before 5 a.m., and the smell quickly consumed him.
“I go out the window, but in my room,” he said.
“The people start breaking the window to take him out,” neighbor Helen Ruiz Castro said.
Video from his neighbors watching outside show the bright orange flames lighting up the area.
“I was scared because my grandma lives right next to it and I was worried about that,” Ruiz Castro said.
“Everyone was scared, worried,” another neighbor, Francisco Barreiro, said.
Firefighters have since extinguished the blaze. First responders say much of the two neighboring homes were preserved.
No injuries were reported, however three people were displaced from their homes, one of whom required assistance from the Red Cross.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
