3 hurt in crash after unsecured load spills across I-95 in Brevard County

An unsecured load caused a major crash that temporarily shut down all southbound lanes of I-95 in Brevard County, FHP says.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 3 a.m. Thursday near mile marker 173, between the Palm Bay Road and Malabar Road exits.

Troopers say a 2009 Volvo semi-tractor was carrying multiple coils of metal wire, and the driver failed to secure the load properly. At least 10 bundles of wire came loose from the trailer and spread across all three southbound lanes.

A second semi-truck and two other cars then ran into the wire, FHP says.

FHP says one of the drivers who wasn’t able to avoid the wire veered off the interstate and crashed into a guardrail.

As a result, three people were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Some lanes have reopened, but drivers should expect delays in the area.
