A former Marion County school bus driver has been cited for failing to yield the right of way in connection with a crash that killed a man in May, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened May 6 on State Road 40 near SE 177th Avenue in Silver Springs.
FHP said the school bus was traveling east on SR 40 and stopped at the intersection while preparing to make a left turn onto SE 177th Avenue
As the bus turned, it entered the path of an oncoming pickup truck towing a trailer. The two vehicles collided.
The pickup truck driver, a 76-year-old man from Silver Springs, was trapped inside the vehicle and taken to the hospital as a trauma alert. He later died from his injuries.
The school bus was carrying four children from Maplewood Elementary, along with a bus aide and the driver. The children were between 5 and 10 years old. No one on the bus was injured.
At the time of the crash, FHP said the investigation was ongoing and no citations would be issued until it was completed.
The driver was removed from driving duties following the crash.
The citation, issued in August 2026, formally identifies failure to yield the right of way as the traffic violation stemming from the fatal crash.
