A 3-year-old girl was hospitalized after being bitten by a dog at their family’s restaurant, Red Rooster Restaurant, on Marco Island.
According to the Marco Island Police Department, officers responded to a call of a child being bitten by a dog on San Marco Road around 12:27 p.m. Sunday.
Officers met with 3-year-old Ava’s family outside the restaurant, and they saw the girl being carried by her mother with her face covered by a rag. Collier County EMS arrived on the scene and assumed care of the child, MIPD said.
According to MIPD, Ava had asked the owner of the dog, which is a Belgian Malinois and the owner said is a service dog, if she could pet the dog. The owner agreed to let the girl pet the dog after he finished eating.
Ava reached out and petted the dog, which turned its head toward her and bit her once in the face, MIPD said.
She and the dog were immediately separated. Ava was then airlifted to Gulf Coast Medical Center, MIPD said.
According to the family, Ava is now out of the hospital after she had reconstructive surgery on her face. She finally started talking again on Wednesday.
Animal control is currently conducting a dangerous animal investigation. According to Collier County Code Enforcement, the dog was properly licensed and vaccinated.
