Deputies responded to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash in Lake Wales on Wednesday.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the crash took place just after 4 p.m. on State Road 60 East at Capps Road.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said that the crash occurred between five vehicles and a total of 11 individuals were involved.
During a preliminary investigation, Sheriff Grady Judd said it appears that one vehicle struck another vehicle in the westbound lanes of SR 60, causing it to careen over into the eastbound lanes in front of two other vehicles.
The sheriff confirmed to WFLA that four people are dead and seven were hospitalized.
As of 6:39 p.m., SR 60 has been shut down. Drivers should use alternative routes until further notice.
