A 41-year-old Pensacola man was killed and a woman was critically injured in a crash Thursday afternoon at a Highway 98 intersection in Escambia County.
It happened around 2 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 98 and Aileron Ave.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, a Toyota Corolla driven by the 41-year-old man was northbound on Aileron Ave., approaching the intersection with Highway 98.
“The driver stopped for the stop sign at the intersection with Highway 98, attempting to turn left, failing to yield to oncoming traffic,” FHP says.
Meanwhile, a loaded tractor trailer driven by a 33-year-old Macon, Georgia, man was eastbound on Highway 98, approaching the intersection with Aileron Ave. as the Toyota crossed the trucks path.
“The truck driver applied the brakes and attempted to miss the Toyota Corolla, but collided in the area of the driver door,” FHP says.
The truck and the Toyota came to a final rest approximately one block to the east in the vicinity of Erin Dr. on Highway 98.
The driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene, while his woman passenger was flown to the hospital with critical injuries.
The truck driver was not injured.
Highway 98 was closed for more than three hours between Aileron Drive and Skylark Drive for FHP to conduct the crash investigation.
